Family Day 2009

Three years ago today we were rushing to get to the courthouse on time as we forgot to set our alarms and woke up 45 minutes or so from the time we had to meet our attorney there. Three years ago today a local chancery court judge agreed that the legal system should recognize what we already knew in our hearts...that we were a family. Three years ago today Patrick's last name was legally changed to ours. So if you would like a refresher, then click here and read about our chaotic morning and special day.

Matthew and I decided that we would celebrate this day forever more as our 'family day'. We would always take off from work and Patrick would stay home from school. So today we did just that. Patrick and I awoke, drove and picked up a dozen donuts and headed to see Judge Grant. Judge Grant hasn't seen Patrick since that wonderful day three years ago....and he was so glad to visit with us. It was so nice of him to take time out of his busy day to meet us. He enjoyed the donuts and OJ too! Afterwards we headed back home and waited for the plumber to come fix our kitchen drain pipe. (This is an event we DON'T plan to be part of our annual family day!). After the plumber left we headed to Primos, where we usually eat breakfast every year, but the kitchen drain changed those plans. Lunch was just as yummy and Matthew was able to order their famous cheese grits (made with half and half) to go along with his salad. Patrick devoured his yummy grilled cheese as he was eying the yummy pumpkin decorated sugar cookies. It was just as yummy as his mom's ghost iced sugar cookie!

Now typically we end our Family Day at the State Fair. But this year it doesn't start till tomorrow. We were a day too early. So we decided to share a first with our son - his first time to the movie theater! We went to the 1:55 showing of ToyStory 2 - 3D! He did wonderful. NowI tried to avoid the high dollar drinks and snacks. I figured his tummy was overly full from the dozen glazed donut holes from breakfast, grilled cheese and sugar cookie he had less than an hour before. However, Mr. Smarty pants declared he wanted something to drink. I explained we couldn't have drinks in the movie theater. His reply - "Then why do we have cup holders?" So off Matthew goes to by the $4.50 small drink and him some nachos. I was so excited to share in this first with our son. Now I am looking forward to October 16th when "Where the Wild Things Are" comes to the theater!

Hope everyone had a great Tuesday! I know ours couldn't have been any better!

I love this! Family Day is so often reserved for holidays and birthdays that we forget milestone moments like these. I love reading about your adventures with parenthood. It's a wonderful feeling. I think God gave us a second son so late in life to remind us of how wonderful they really are...and so we don't try and sell our preteen on eBay =) Happy Family Day!
